BP to sell North Sea assets

This is more of a shift in focus than a reduction. In fact BP claim to be increasing investment in the UK oil sector. They are developing four new UK fields.
However, the sale of these assets may not have occurred had it not been for the Gulf of Mexico oil spill disaster which saw BP as one of the main companies at fault. With thousands of claimants still to be processed, total compensation levels have still not been finalized.
